7 Oral Hygiene Tips for Halloween

Halloween is already on October 31 and the children are already electric about it…

During this day, particularly dedicated to the little ones, authentic pilgrimages are made in search of valuable treats.

It’s with great anxiety that children live the preparation and the party in which this day is revealed, namely in the greater permissiveness of parents regarding the consumption of treats.

The celebration of “Halloween” is an opportunity for parents and children to become aware of their consumption of treats in order to maintain optimal oral health throughout the year.

Thus, our clinical team decided to prepare a set of tips to help parents in this mission: “7 Oral Care Tips for Halloween”.

What to do on Halloween to “minimize the damage”?
Following these tips, parents prevent the formation of cavities in their children’s teeth while teaching them healthy oral hygiene habits:

• Select Treats – Not all “Halloween” treats are equally harmful. It is preferable that children consume treats that melt easily and are swallowed quickly – Caramel type sweets that stick to the teeth and remain in the mouth for a long time should be avoided.
• Give them a good meal – Make sure your kids have eaten properly before they leave for Halloween to limit their appetite for eating treats.
• Encourage them to brush their teeth – Encourage your children to brush their teeth every time they consume sweets. Brushing reduces the time that the sugar is in contact with the teeth, thus preventing the formation of cavities.
• Make the surpluses disappear or implement an exchange program – It is always a good idea to make the goodies left over after “Halloween” disappear. Alternatively, you can challenge your child to collect as many treats as possible and then participate in an exchange program.
• Place Limits on Consumption – Establish the maximum number of sweets to consume daily. A good idea will be to allow children to eat one or two sweets after meals, encouraging them to brush their teeth afterwards to neutralize the sugar.
• Make use of Sugar-free tablets – Sugar-free tablets can help as they are, in the vast majority, better than any delicacy. In addition, they help to remineralize the initial attack of acid on tooth enamel.
• Do routine dental checkups – Take your child to the dentist every 6 months to prevent dental problems and discover them at an early stage.

Following the 7 tips we have listed, your child will be able to have fun on “Halloween” and keep his smile healthy and happy.

Never forget that treats, when consumed in moderation, are not necessarily the enemy. The enemy is not having oral hygiene habits and not doing preventive follow-up at your dentist.

The prevention of the oral health of the children is essential to prevent the appearance of dental caries, gum problems and consequent loss of teeth.

With proper follow-up, semi-annual visits to the dentist, you can prevent these and other problems by gaining your children’s oral health and saving on your wallet by avoiding expenses associated with more expensive treatments.

Now you know how you can minimize the damage and take advantage of “Halloween” for a didactic action.
