Conscious Sedation

Conscious sedation is a combination of techniques, through which it is administered medicines, that allow you to relax (sedate) and block pain (anesthetic) during the medical act or oral surgery. During this procedure, you are likely to be able to keep awake but not be able to speak.

Why Conscious Sedation?

The main objective of this is to produce a state of relaxation and absence of pain through the use of drugs indicated for this purpose. In this way people who are afraid of the dentist or who develop high levels of anxiety have a solution here that allows them to do dental treatments more comfortably, without pain and without the anxiety that is characteristic of people with phobia at the dentist.
Types of Conscious Sedation?
There are several types of sedation:

  • Intravenous Sedation
  • Oral Sedation
  • Conscious Sedation with Nitrous Oxide

At our Dental Clinic in Lisbon, we only use Oral Sedation and Conscious Sedation with Nitrous Oxide.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Here, one of our doctors will give you a medication that will relieve stress and anxiety during treatment. In addition, we will prescribe, if necessary, a sedative to take the night before and in the morning of your appointment. These medications have a sedative effect, allowing you to relax more easily during your visit to the dentist.

In addition, your dentist, during the consultation, will administer a local anesthetic to reduce any pain during treatment.

Conscious Sedation with Nitrous Oxide

Conscious sedation with nitrous oxide is a medical procedure that involves the inhalation of a gas (nitrous oxide) whose objective is to facilitate dental treatments and reduce the fear and anxiety of the experience at the dentist. This technique is revolutionary because it started to allow a certain degree of sedation to be induced maintaining the level of consciousness, allowing treatments to be carried out on all those people who are afraid of the dentist.

Advantages of Conscious Sedation?

For patients, this means being able to do the dental treatments they need or would like, without the usual feeling of fear and anxiety that characterize visits to the dentist.

Is conscious sedation safe?

Yes. The techniques we offer our patients have a high degree of safety. During the entire process you will be supervised by a doctor and an assistant so that the entire procedure runs smoothly.
