2nd Opinion

All dentist are unique on the way they handle oral health problems. In case of doubt on a treatment or procedure, please ask for new, impartial and honest opinion.

When seeking for a second opinion, consider an experienced dentist in the field, who clearly speaks out the benefits and risks of the treatments. Who has full access to the most updated information and who is able to pass it on.

Firstly you will need to find another dentist to analyze the problem:

Ask your relatives and friends. If you do not feel comfortable to speak to your current dentist about your concerns, speak to your friends, family or co-workers and ask for recommendations. Ask them what they like and dislike about their own dentists.

Look up for an orthodontics school in your area. Speak to the school/university/centre department related to the matter you need information about or about a certain dentist field area.

Speak to someone within your contacts related to the heath filed, they might know a dentists in the field you are looking for.

Consult your dental insurance for dentists in that filed.

Once you have found the dentist write down a list of questions to ask, as for instance:

  • Do you agree with the diagnosis that my dentist has done?
  • Are there other treatment options?
  • How much will it cost each of those options?
  • How can each of those options enhance my oral health?
  • What are the benefits and risks of the treatment?
  • How long will the treatment take ?
  • What is the probable result if the treatment is done?
  • Is it necessary constant follow-up?
  • What shall I expect in the future?

When considering your various options, take into consideration the experience of each and every dentist that you may choose. Although your current dentist have the advantage of being familiar with our oral health history, a new dentist may access it too.
The most important is to avoid making major decisions concerning your oral health before being properly informed and see all your doubts properly and fully answered.
