Dental Braces and Orthodontics: Frequent Questions

Do dental braces hurt?
The placement of braces should not cause any pain. However, after placing them, it’s possible that there will be some discomfort in the teeth under tension during the first one or two days. In addition, your lips and cheeks should take one to two weeks to get used to the presence of the dental appliance.

When should the first orthodontic appointment be made?
The vast majority of orthodontic problems are easier to correct if they were detected at an early stage. In this way, the orthodontist will be able to intervene earlier and prevent future complications. Currently, it’s recommended that the first orthodontic consultation be done at around 7 years of age or earlier if a problem is detected by family members, your dentist or pediatrician.

I don’t like the idea of ??using dental braces. Is there a more aesthetic solution?
This is perhaps the most frequently asked question. Fortunately the answer is YES! There are many aesthetic solutions for performing treatments with orthodontic dental appliances, namely:

• Aesthetic dental device in porcelain
• Transparent device – Invisalign
• Invisible device or lingual device – Incognito

How often should I visit my dentist?
In addition to orthodontic maintenance consultations, it’s advisable to visit your dentist with a minimum frequency of 6 months to perform proper oral hygiene and check-up.

What’s the age limit to start using dental braces?
Any healthy adult can start treatment with an orthodontic appliance as long as the orthodontist considers that he has the necessary conditions to do so.

Can adults also use dental braces?
Yes. Nowadays there are specific solutions for adults and it’s very common to find people aged 30, 40, 50 and even 60 years old using dental braces.

How often are maintenance visits to the device necessary?
The frequency of maintenance visits depends on the type of treatment performed. However, the normal frequency will be once a month.

Why are maintenance consultations necessary?
Maintenance consultations for dental appliances are due to the fact that it is necessary for the orthodontist to evaluate the progression of the treatment and, mainly, so that he can readjust the forces applied to the teeth through the dental brackets.

What happens if I miss the device maintenance appointments?
If you miss maintenance appointments, you may compromise the success of your treatment. In addition, it will prolong the duration of your orthodontic treatment.

Can a pregnant woman wear dental braces?
Although there is no technical impediment, it’s advisable to discuss this issue with the doctor who accompanies your pregnancy and your orthodontist. In practice, pregnancy generally changes the woman’s entire body, including the mouth. For example, pregnant women often experience changes in the gums, which are more susceptible to infections.

What hygiene care do I need when using the dental appliance?
In addition to daily hygiene and visits to the dentist every 6 months, additional care is recommended. Your orthodontist will explain to you what care you should take and how you can clean your dental appliance.

Can I play sports with a dental appliance?
Yes of course. However, it’s recommended that patients use their own protections while playing sports. These protections are relatively economical, comfortable and come in many colors.

Does the dental appliance interfere with the practice of musical instruments?
No. At an early stage you may feel some difference, but you will easily get over the habituation period.
