Endodontic is the field of the Dental Medicine that treats pathologies of the dental pulp (also called as nerve).
Dental Pulp is located inside the tooth and it is covered by a hard tissue – the dentine – being responsible for the nutrition and sensitivity of the tooth, through the blood vessels and nerves that it is made of.
Problems in the pulp may be caused by traumatism, fractures or deep cavities and may provoke sensitivity in the teeth and gum abscesses. Some symptoms include spontaneous pain, teeth sensitivity when exposed to cold/hot and discomfort to touch and mastication.
In case of necrosis or inflammation it is necessary to use endodontic (root canal), being the only solution to recover the tooth and avoid its extraction. This treatment extracts the pulp and it is painless as it is applied local anaesthesia. After treatment, the discomfort may last for 2 to 4 days, being controlled with the use of medication.
Root canal not only eliminates the pulp problem as after tooth reconstruction allows normal mastication function.
